What is the DELE certificate?

The DELE (Diploma Español como Lengua Extranjera) offers the only internationally accredited official title certificate and is officially recognised as a qualification for proficiency and fluency in Spanish. It is issued and recognised by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport of Spain.

Anybody who is the citizen of a country where Spanish is not the official language can take the DELE. As we are a preparation academy for the a DELE Diploma (Diploma in Spanish as a foreign language) here at our Academy our students can avail of a wonderful opportunity to formalise their achievements in the language and gain from the opportunities this may present.

These exams take place in the official DUBLIN Instituto Cervantes on set dates.

DELE A1 exam for young learners

The DELE A1 certificate for young learners certifies the linguistic competence necessary to understand and use common, everyday expressions and simple sentences, to address immediate needs.

What are the advantages of holding a DELE A1 certificate for young learners?

  • It is an official certification that complies with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages(CEFRE).
  • It certifies and assesses knowledge of Spanish from the first moment of contact with the language.
  • It is valid indefinitely.
  • It motivates students between 11 and 17 years old, because it is both a challenge and offers recognition of their learning at these early stages.

Exam specifications

The DELE A1 exam for young learners consists of four parts:

  • Reading comprehension test (45 min)
  • Listening comprehension test (20 min)
  • Writing expression and interaction test (25 min)
  • Oral expression and interaction test (10 min + 10 min preparation time)

Students who pass the DELE A2/B1 exam for young learners, will receive one of the following certificates:

Certificate of Spanish level A2

  • This diploma certifies that the candidate can understand commonly used, everyday phrases and expressions related to areas of experience especially relevant to them (basic information about themselves, and their families, shopping, places of interest, work, etc.).

Certificate of Spanish level B1

This certifies that the language user can:

  • Understand the gist of clear texts, in standard language, if they involve well-known topics related to work, studies or leisure.
  • Deal with most situations that occur while travelling in areas where Spanish is spoken.
  • Produce simple and coherent texts about familiar topics, or topics of personal interest.
  • Describe experiences, events, wishes and hopes, as well as to be able to briefly express opinions or explain plans.

What are the advantages of taking the DELE A2/B1 exam for young learners?

  • They offer candidates the possibility to obtain either the DELE level A2 or B1, depending on their results. In other words, it is possible to qualify for one of two levels of reference by taking a single exam.
  • As with the other DELE certification exams, candidates who pass the exam receive a DELE certificate, an official certificate in Spanish, issued by the Instituto Cervanteson behalf of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport of Spain.
  • This exam assesses and certifies candidates’ language competence at level A2 or B1 in Spanish, in accordance with theCommon European Framework of Reference for Languages(CEFR) and the Instituto Cervantes’s Curriculum Plan.
  • As with the other DELE certificates, the certificate is valid indefinitely and is recognized internationally.
  • The exam recognizes and certifies, with the official DELE Certificate of Spanish certification, the Spanish language level achieved by the youngest students of this language: this exam is adapted to candidates between 11 and 17 years old (candidates aged 18 years and above should register for the general exams).

  • Listening comprehension test (30 min)

The Diploma in Spanish (DELE) level B1 accredits language users’ capacity to:

  • Understand the gist of clear texts, in standard language, if they involve well-known topics related to work, studies or leisure.
  • Deal with most situations that occur while travelling in areas where Spanish is spoken.
  • Produce simple and coherent texts about familiar topics, or topics of personal interest
  • Describe experiences, events, wishes and hopes, as well as be able to briefly express opinions or explain plans.

The level B1 examination includes four parts:

Group 1

  • Reading comprehension test (70 min, 5 tasks)
  • Written expression and interaction test (60 min, 2 tasks)

Group 2

  • Listening comprehension test (40 min, 5 tasks)
  • Oral expression and interaction test (15 min + 15 min to prepare)

The final grade is either PASS or FAIL. To obtain a diploma the candidate must get a minimum of 60 points out of 100 on the examination, getting at least 30 points out of 50 in each test group.

IMPORTANT: In the written expression test, the candidate must strictly follow instructions about the number of words and the text format.

The Diploma in Spanish (DELE) level B2 accredits language users’ capacity to:

  • Interact with native speakers with a sufficient degree of fluency and spontaneity to enable easy and natural communication between interlocutors.
  • Produce clear and detailed texts about diverse topics, as well as defend an opinion about general topics, expressing the pros and cons of each argument.
  • Understand the gist of complex texts about both concrete and abstract topics, including technical texts, provided they are within the candidate’s area of expertise.

The level B2 examination includes four parts:

Group 1

  • Reading comprehension test (70 min, 4 tasks)
  • Written expression and interaction test (80 min, 2 tasks)

Group 2

  • Listening comprehension test (40 min, 5 tasks)
  • Oral expression and interaction test (20 min + 20 min to prepare)

The final grade is either PASS or FAIL. To obtain a diploma the candidate must get a minimum of 60 points out of 100 on the examination, getting at least 30 points out of 50 in each test group.

IMPORTANT: In the written expression test, the candidate must strictly follow instructions about the number of words and the text format.

The DELE C1 guarantees that the student has made successful progress in the language and certifies more than an advanced level of Spanish.

This diploma certifies sufficient linguistic competence to:

  1. Understand a wide variety of lengthy, and somewhat demanding texts, as well as grasp the implicit meaning in the same.
  2. Express themselves fluently and spontaneously without apparent effort to find the right words.
  3. Use the language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes.
  4. Produce clear, well-structured and detailed texts about topics of some complexity, correctly using mechanisms of organization, articulation and cohesion in the text.

The DELE C1 examination is made up of four tests, organized into two groups (Group 1: Tests 1 and 3. Group: 2: Tests 2 and 4):

  • Test 1: Reading comprehension and use of language (90 minutes, 5 tasks).
  • Test 2: Listening comprehension and use of language (50 minutes, 5 tasks).
  • Test 3: Integrated skills. Listening comprehension and written expression and interaction (80 minutes, 2 tasks).
  • Test 4: Integrated skills. Reading comprehension and oral expression and interaction (20 minutes) (and 20 minutes to prepare).

A “passing” grade is required for each test taken during the same examination session.

Starting with the August 2013 exam sessions, the maximum possible score is 100 and a minimum score of 30 is necessary in each of the two groups in order to receive an overall “passing” grade.

The final grade is either PASS or FAIL.

IMPORTANT: In the written expression test, the candidate must strictly follow instructions about the number of words and the text format.

The DELE C2 certifies sufficient linguistic competence to communicate effectively in any situation, proving the ability to spontaneously adapt to any context, with a high degree of precision. The language users show subtle control of nuances which allows for fluent and natural expression in all interactions.

The DELE C2 examination consists of three tests:

  • Test 1: Use of language, reading and listening comprehension (105 minutes, 6 tasks).
  • Test 2: Integrated skills: Listening and reading comprehension, and written expression and interaction (150 minutes, 3 tasks).
  • Test 3: Integrated skills: Reading comprehension and oral expression and interaction (20 minutes) (and 30 minutes to prepare).

A “passing” grade is required for each test taken during the same examination session.

The maximum possible score on the examination is 100 points, and it is necessary to get 60% on each test; a minimum score of 20 is necessary on each of the three tests.

The final grade is either PASS or FAIL.
